Galveston Seawall Held Back Storm Surge of Hurricane Ike
The eye of Hurricane Ike made landfall in Galveston, Texas, at 3:10 a.m. EDT September 13 2008, with sustained winds of 110 miles per hour - the National Hurricane Center.
The Galveston Seawall Held Back Storm Surge of Hurricane Ike and all the Modern High-rise structures remain proudly standing, but about 4.5 million people are without power and most of Galveston is Massively Damaged from Flooding and High Winds. Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas broke down in tears over the destruction.
Insurance companies are girding for losses in Texas that could far exceed the $2 billion that Hurricane Rita cost them in 2005 and might approach the $41 billion caused by Hurricane.
There's about three feet of water inside the courthouse building, according to Galveston County Emergency officials. There are 27 people currently inside that building but EOC officials believe they are perfectly safe, because they have moved to the second floor. The courthouse still has power because it is running on a generator. The people inside managed to move most of the first floor computers and several boxes of election materials up to the second floor before it flooded.
Work crews are coming in Monday to restore power, and priority will be given to hospitals, fire and police departments and water and sewage treatment plants.
A preliminary estimate predicted insured damages of between $10 billion and $20 billion, with losses split equally between individuals and companies, according to Eqecat, which uses computer models to calculate exposure for insurance companies.
