The University of Texas System Board of Regents voted unanimously to restore the 500-bed John Sealy Hospital and trauma center to its pre-hurricane operations, and to build a new surgical tower.

House budgeted $700 million to be paid from the state’s rainy day fund, UTMB would get $350 million
If approved by the Legislature, the biggest share of the money, at $354.5 million, would go for rebuilding and other expenses at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, which was devastated by Hurricane Ike.
UTMB is important not only to Galveston, but statewide, since patients have come for treatment from other parts of Texas, officials noted.

The VA Outpatient Clinic on Galveston Island reopened March 4. The facility is centrally located near 39th Street, close to many restaurants and businesses.
The building is newly renovated and staffed by highly qualified and experienced VA physicians, nurses, technicians, and administrative staff.
The clinic, open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., provides primary care, telemedicine, mental healthcare, phlebotomy, electronic patient records, and women's health services, in addition to local radiology services.
Veterans from both Galveston Island and the mainland will be able to obtain healthcare at the new clinic.
