Galveston Island Beach Restoration Project Galveston $13.5 million beach restoration project will widen three miles of eroded beaches west of the seawall.
The project, which will widen beaches by 200 feet using more than one million cubic feet of sand dredged from the east end of the island, is the largest ever undertaken by the Texas General Land Office.
The project is scheduled to begin next fall 2008. It will be financed with $6 million from the state, $1.25 million from Galveston County and $5 million in state funds from the Coastal Erosion Planning and Response Act.
Homeowners associations will likely raise more than $1 million of the $1.25 million in local matching funds, and the remaining will come from the Galveston Park Board.
The seawall isn't the only area along the Texas coast that will be restored. Surfside in Brazoria County, Sylvan Beach in La Porte, and South Padre Island will receive similar help. | Galveston Seawall

The Texas General Land Office is providing $3 million to South Padre Island to rebuild eroded beaches. About $2.1 million will cover the cost of moving sand from another source, $600,000 will be used to move sand from highway rights-of-way to the beach, and $300,000 will go to study possible offshore sources of sand.
